How to disable Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook for Windows with Microsoft Intune

As most of you have heard, Microsoft will start automatically migrating customers to the new Outlook for Windows from 1 January 2025. The exact dates are:

INFORMATION
Automatic migration will start in January 2025 for Small Businesses and from April 2026 for Enterprises.

I have been using the new Outlook for more than 6 months now anyway and I must say you do get used to it. But I can understand that some end users might not be ready for this yet, which is why in this blog post I will show you how to disable this Admin-Controlled migration using a Configuration Policy in Microsoft Intune.

You probably noticed the “Try the new Outlook” toggle in Classic Outlook.

In the follow steps I will show you how you can disable the Admin-Controlled migration to the new Outlook for Windows and also hide the “Try the new Outlook” toggle with Microsoft Intune.

Disable the Admin-Controlled migration

Disabling the Admin-Controlled migration is nothing more than changing or adding the following registry key in Windows.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General]
β€œDoNewOutlookAutoMigration”= dword:00000000

So if your devices are managed with Microsoft Intune, we just need to create a Configuration Policy in Microsoft Intune. Let’s go!

Microsoft Intune – Configuration policy

Go to the Microsoft Intune admin center | Devices | Windows | Configuration and create a New Policy and choose Settings catalog. Name the policy following the internal naming convention of your company. If you don’t have any naming convention in place, feel free to check Part One and Part Two on my “How to organize your Microsoft Intune Deployments like a Rockstar” series.

In our policy we will add the following two settings:

CONFIGURATION
Hide the “Try the new Outlook” toggle in Outlook (User) = Enabled
Admin-Controlled Migration to New Outlook (User) = Disabled

Assign this policy to a user group, I will use a Dynamic User Group based on an active Microsoft 365 Apps license.

Now let’s see what this does on our device.

End-user Experience

Once the policy is applied you’ll notice that the “Try the new Outlook” toggle is no longer visible.

If we look deeper into the device and open the Registry Editor, you’ll notice that two DWORD entries are created.

So this covers disabling the Admin-Controlled migration of the New Outlook for Windows migration with Microsoft Intune. If you don’t yet want your end users to be required to work with the new Outlook and your devices are managed with Microsoft Intune, be sure to implement this solution before January 2025 (for small businesses) and April 2026 (for Enterprises).
This is it for now, stay tuned for more!
